I came up with this recipe a long time ago (before Paleo). It has always been one of my family’s favorites. I renamed it Savory Paleo Spaghetti Sauce because it is a savory sauce, verses the sweet sauces you might buy from the grocery store and it fits the bill, when it comes to Paleo. It’s an inexpensive way to feed a family.
I remember a young family friend came over and had spaghetti with us one evening. He was so excited to have spaghetti with us, he filled his plate to the rim and dug in. As soon as he tasted it, he sat back and said “I’m not hungry.” I asked him why and he replied “This spaghetti sauce is not sweet like my mom’s. She uses Prego.” My kids couldn’t believe they were hearing. “Sweet spaghetti sauce? Eww!”
Ingredients for Savory Paleo Spaghetti Sauce
1 pound ground beef
1 medium onion, chopped
5 garlic cloves, minced
1 large can (28 ounces) of crushed tomatoes
1 bay leaf
1 1/2 teaspoons dried basil
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 teaspoon sea salt
1/2 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper
Instructions for Savory Paleo Spaghetti Sauce
Brown ground beef over medium heat in a large skillet (If needed, add a little water to keep the beef from sticking to the pan). Add onions and cook until translucent. Add garlic, cook and stir one minute more.
Next, add crushed tomatoes, bay leaf, basil, oregano, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 30 minutes, stirring frequently.
Serve over warm spaghetti squash or zucchini noodles. Enjoy!
